When people look for information, they type keywords into a search engine, and then a list of results pop up on their computer screen. If your site isn't listed in the first few pages chances are your potential customers are going to visit another site and spend their money there.

Search engines rank sites by searching web pages for content, and match it up with the term put into the search engine. For instance, if you type "ford auto" into a search engine, you are going to get a fair amount of sites that sell ford autos, because those words appear on the site.

Of course information by itself is not enough to get the potential customer to buy your goods or services. You are going to need to create a "call to action". A common way of creating a call to action is to present a problem, then offer a solution. Another way is to create a sense of urgency, (Hurry now while supplies last, sale ends Mar 1, etc).

If your business is working with a limited internet advertising budget, you should know that building a website that is content rich and creates a call to action can be done at a fairly low cost.

Graphics can and do grab the viewers attention, but remember always that content and keyword placement are the most important things to consider when building a website. Number two in importance would be creating a call to action. Design and graphics comes in at third place.

It is interesting that the website feature that comes in third place is often the most expensive part of creating the website. It's not something that should be ignored completely, but you should focus more effort on the first two things, because they are the lifeblood of your sites viability.
